DVD-R: As a member of DVD family, DVD-R is a kind of one-time recording (Write-once) and repeatedly reading DVD disc. This kind of disc has an initial capacity of 3.95 GB, which now has reached 4.7GB. And this DVD-R can be played on most DVD drives and DVD players.
DVD-RW: The disc is using phase change technology, which allows you to repeatedly erase and write data.
DVD+RW: A recordable and rewritable disc which takes the phase change technology used by CD-RW so as to read and write disk for many times. It is actually the combination of the DVD-R and DVD-RW.
DVD-RAM: A DVD format which enables you to read and write data on it without limited. It is also a computer specified DVD disc as well as DVD-ROM. Even this kind of discs feature in superior performance, it costs high.
DVD Related Glossary Explanations
CD: A digital music optical disc developed by Sony and Philips. It can 12cm diameters or 8cm diameter in size. The former is most commonly used which can provide 74 minutes of high quality music.
CD-ROM: A read-only CD which is used to store computer data.
VCD: It stands for the video discs which use the MPEG-1 compression technology. The image clarity of VCD is just as that of VHS tapes.
